Pectoralis Major
Flexes the arm; adducts it anteriorly and draws the arm across the chest (chest area).
Anterior Deltoid
Flexes the shoulder (anterior part of the deltoid); located at the front of the shoulder.
Coracobrachialis
Flexes the shoulder and adducts the arm; located in the upper arm near the shoulder joint.
Posterior Deltoid
Extends the shoulder; located at the back of the shoulder.
Latissimus Dorsi
Extends the arm and adducts it posteriorly; located from the lower back to the sides.
Teres Major
Extends, adducts, and medially rotates the arm; located under the shoulder joint.
Teres Minor
Externally rotates the shoulder; located above the Teres Major.
Infraspinatus
Externally rotates the shoulder; located below the spine of the scapula.
Supraspinatus
Abducts the shoulder for the first ~150 degrees; located above the spine of the scapula.
Subscapularis
Internally rotates the shoulder; located on the anterior surface of the scapula.
Rectus Femoris
Flexes the thigh and extends the leg; located at the front of the thigh.
Adductor Group
Adducts the thigh; located in the inner thigh muscles.
Gluteus Maximus
Extends the thigh and rotates it outward; located in the buttocks.
Hamstring Group
Extends the thigh and flexes the leg; located at the back of the thigh (includes Biceps Femoris, Semitendinosus, Semimembranosus).
Biceps Brachii
Flexes the forearm (when supinated) and supinates the forearm and hand; located at the front of the upper arm.
Triceps Brachii
Extends the lower arm; located at the back of the upper arm.
Trapezius
Shrugs the shoulders; extends the head and neck; located in the upper back and neck.
Serratus Anterior
Pulls the shoulders down and forward; abducts and rotates the scapula upward; located on the side of the chest.
Levator Scapulae
Elevates and retracts the scapula; located in the back and side of the neck.
Deltoid
Abducts the arm; assists in flexion and extension of the arm; located on the shoulder.
Rotator Cuff Muscles
Provide stability to the glenohumeral joint; includes Teres Minor, Infraspinatus, Supraspinatus, Subscapularis.
Study Tip 1
Focus on the actions of each muscle.
Study Tip 2
Create flashcards for muscle names and functions.
Study Tip 3
Practice identifying these muscles on diagrams.
Study Tip 4
Review movement patterns in relation to muscle groups.
