Solvent

A substance that dissolves in a solute

Solute

a substance that is dissolved in a solvent

Solution

a mixture of one or more solutes dissolved in a solvent

Saturated solution

a solution containing the maximum concentration of a solute dissolved in a solvent at a specific temperature

Residue

a substances that remains after evaporation, distillation, filtration or any similar process

Filtrate

a liquid or solution that has passed through a filter

Precipitate

form when two solutions are mixed/reacted together

Decanting

the process of removing a liquid from a solid, which has settled, by pouring

Evaporation

used to separate a soluble salt from a solution by heating with a bunsen burner

Filtration

used to separate a soluble solid from an insoluble solid, or separate an insoluble solid from a liquid

Crystallisation

the process of forming crystals (hydrated salts) in a solution of a crystalline substance

Desiccator

an airtight glass container, that contains a chemical, which absorbs water.

Chromatography

used to separate mixtures of different solutes with different solubilities
