Anatomical Nomenclature

Standard terms for naming/describing structures and location in the human body.

Anatomical position

standing up facing forward, arms at the sides, palms facing

forward

Supine position

 Laying on back face up palms up

Prone position

Laying on the stomach, face down with palms facing the ground

Coronal/frontal plane

divides the body into front and back halves

Transverse/horizontal plane

divides the body into upper and lower portions

Sagittal Plane

 plane divides the body into left and right halves

Anterior/ventral

 towards the front of the body

Posterior/dorsal

Toward the back of the body

Superior/rostral

toward the head (up/above)

Inferior/caudal

Away from the head (below)

Proximal

 location in the body nearest to the point of

attachment (toward the body)

Distal

 location in the body furthest from the point of

attachment

Lateral

 location in the body that is toward the side

Medial

location in the body that is toward the middle/midline

Unilateral

one side

Bilateral

two sides

Ipsilateral

same side of the body

Contralateral

opposite sides of the body

Abduction

Movement away from the midline of the body

Adduction

Movement toward the midline of the body (adding together)

Extension

Movement that increases the angle between two body parts (puling 2 ends further apart)

Flexion

Movement that decreases the angle between two body parts

a live X-ray procedure used to watch how food and liquid move through your mouth and throat to check for swallowing problems.
