Unrestricted Line (URL) Officers
Officers who serve in all primary warfare communities (aviation, submarine, surface, SEALs, EOD) and are eligible for command at sea and ashore.
Restricted Line (RL) Officers
Officers who provide highly specialized technical services supporting naval missions, wearing rank insignia identical to URL officers, but not generally eligible for command at sea.
Staff Corps (SC) Officers
Officers who provide specialized technical and professional services (e.g., Medical, Supply, CEC, JAG, Chaplain) and wear their rank on the right collar with their corps insignia on the left collar.
Information Warfare - Line (IW-L)
A warfighting discipline created to integrate kinetic and non-kinetic capabilities, officially elevated to Line officer status in December 2024.
Assured Command and Control (C2)
An Information Warfare warfighting pillar that assures secure and rapid sharing of information across all commands and most platforms.
Battlespace Awareness
An Information Warfare warfighting pillar focused on maintaining awareness of the physical environment and threats posed by potential adversaries.
Integrated Fires
An Information Warfare warfighting pillar using cyberspace operations, electronic warfare, and information operations to deny, disrupt, defeat, or manipulate adversary capabilities.
Intelligence Preparation of the Operational Environment (IPOE)
The systematic and continuous analysis of the adversary, terrain, and weather in the assigned or potential battlespace to reduce operational risk.
Indications and Warning (I&W)
An intelligence function aimed at providing early warning of potential hostile action by monitoring adversary order of battle and operating patterns.
Targeting
A joint intelligence and operations function in which an adversary's critical vulnerabilities are identified for possible attack or disruption.
Cryptologic Warfare (CW)
An Information Warfare specialty focusing on Signals Intelligence (SIGINT), Electronic Warfare (EW), Information Operations (IO), and Integrated Fires.
Signals Intelligence (SIGINT)
The collection and analysis of electromagnetic signals from an adversary's communication, radar, and weapons systems.
Electronic Warfare (EW)
The use of electromagnetic and directed energy to control the electromagnetic spectrum or attack an enemy, encompassing EA, EP, and ES activities.
Information Operations (IO)
The employment of information-related capabilities to influence, disrupt, corrupt, or usurp adversaries' decision-making processes.
Cyber Warfare Engineer (CWE)
Officers highly trained in disruptive technologies who research, design, and develop software and firmware for CNA, CNE, and CND operations.
Communications Systems Warfare Officer (CSWO)
Officers who operate, maintain, secure, plan, acquire, and integrate afloat and ashore network domains across NIPRNET, SIPRNET, and JWICS.
NIPRNET
Non-Classified Internet Protocol Routing Network, used exclusively for Unclassified information.
SIPRNET
Secret Internet Protocol Routing Network, used for information classified up to and including the Secret level.
JWICS
Joint Worldwide Intelligence Communications System, used for information classified up to Top Secret (TS) and Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI).
Maritime Space Officer (MSO)
The Navy's space subject matter experts, created in August 2021 to integrate joint space capabilities into maritime plans and operations.
Communications Jamming
The deliberate radiation, re-radiation, or reflection of electromagnetic signals to impair or deny the enemy's use of communications circuits.
Imitative Communications Deception
The introduction of fraudulent transmissions into enemy communications systems in imitation of authentic transmissions to confuse or deceive.
Joint Intelligence Preparation of the Operating Environment (JIPOE)
A continuous four-step analytical process used by joint intelligence organizations to produce intelligence assessments for the joint force commander.
Engineering Duty Officer (EDO)
Restricted Line officers providing technical expertise and leadership in the acquisition, design, construction, maintenance, and modernization of Navy platforms.
Aerospace Engineering Duty Officer (AEDO)
Restricted Line officers providing management and technical direction in the acquisition process, testing, and evaluation of naval aircraft, spacecraft, and weapons.
Aerospace Maintenance Duty Officer (AMDO)
Restricted Line officers involved in material acquisition, support, and fleet maintenance management as NAVAIR Program Managers or Depot Commanding Officers.
Public Affairs Officer (PAO)
Restricted Line officers operating under the principle of 'maximum disclosure, minimum delay' to handle media operations, internal communications, and community engagement.
Human Resources (120X)
A Restricted Line community charged with delivering expertise to define, recruit, develop, assign, and retain personnel for the Navy Total Force mission.
Foreign Area Officer (FAO)
Navy international engagement professionals who provide operational experience, cultural knowledge, and language expertise across global postings.
Medical Corps
