• social more than biological development

• Early adulthood is prime time for high energy, hard physical labor, and safe reproduction

Organ reserve

extra power that each organ uses only in extraordinary circumstances, a reserve that gradually diminishes with age. Many 20-year-olds stay awake all night, exercise to exhaustion, or take drugs that disrupt the brain, and still function the next day, thanks to organ reserve

homeostasis

body's functions to maintain equilibrium 

• worsens as you get older, which is why a lot of older adults die from heat waves

binge eating disorders

An eating disorder common in adolescence and emerging adulthood, which involves compulsive overeating.

bulimia nervosa

An eating disorder characterized by binge eating and subsequent purging, usually by induced vomiting and/or use of laxatives.

anorexia

distorted body image, severe calorie restriction, and intense fear of weight gain

• burns fat, thins hair and bones

• 1% of young females have anorexia

Allostasis

a slower body adjustment to maintain equilibrium 

• Unhealthy habits like sleep deprivation, inactivity, unhealthy eating, etc. Shortens life by 10+ years 

Postformal thought

proposed adult stage of cognitive development after Piaget's 4 stages; practicality, more flexible, more complex (using emotion and pragmatics)
