Glycolysis
The first step of cellular respiration which occurs in the cytoplasm and literally means "breaking down sugars".
Cytoplasm
The location within the cell where the process of glycolysis occurs.
Glucose
A 6-carbon molecule that is split into two 3-carbon pyruvate molecules during glycolysis.
Pyruvate
The two 3-carbon molecules produced from the splitting of one 6-carbon glucose molecule.
Anaerobic
A term describing a process that does not use oxygen, such as glycolysis.
Metabolism
The set of life-sustaining chemical reactions in organisms that includes glycolysis as a part of nearly all living organisms' processes.
Energy Yield of Glycolysis
The process of glycolysis produces only a small amount of energy during the conversion of glucose to pyruvate.
