Henry Adams

• political writer, historian, leading intellectual who was posthumously awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1919 for The Education of Henry Adams

• son of diplomat Charles Francis Adams Sr

• edited the North American Review, taught at harvard, authored The History of the United States of America, Democracy, and Esther

Amos T. Akerman

• attorney general under Ulysses Grant 1870-71

• served in the Confederate army from Georgia, but after the war supported the end of slavery and joined the Republican party

• as attorney general he aggressively prosecuted the KKK with the Enforcement Acts as the director of the new Department of Justice before being asked to resign

Horatio Alger

• one of the most widely read authors in the gilded age

• first book Ragged Dck: Street life in New York with the Bootblacks published as a serial (larger work published in smaller increments) in 1867 and became a hit

• imitated in 100+ subsequent books with similar rags-to-riches themes

Adelbert Ames

• senator, then governor of Mississippi during Reconstruction

• general during the civil war then became provisional governor of Mississippi in 1868

• guided state through reconstruction but fought a losing battle against Redemption forces after being elected governor

Oakes Ames

• US rep from Massachusetts known as “King of Spades” bc he owned a shovel empire

• largely responsible Union Pacific being completed

• infamously censured by congress 1873 for providing cash and Credit Mobilier stock support to Union Pacific legislation

• died soon after

Chester A. Arthur

• President (republican) from 1881 after the death of James A. Garfield

• New York Stalwart under guidance of Roscoe Conkling,
