Acid
A substance that produces hydrogen ions (H+) in a water solution.
Hydronium ions
H3O+ - formed when H+ ions interact with water.
Properties of Acids
Characteristics include sour taste, corrosive nature, and predictable color change with indicators.
Indicator
An organic compound that changes color in the presence of acid or base.
Litmus paper
Turns red in acid and blue in base.
Common Acids
Acids found in foods and the body, e.g., citric acid, hydrochloric acid.
Strong acid
An acid that ionizes completely in solution.
Weak acid
An acid that only partly ionizes in solution.
Strong base
A base that dissociates completely in solution.
Weak base
A base that does not ionize completely in solution.
Strength of Acids and Bases
Determined by the extent to which they ionize in solution.
Concentration
The amount of substance dissolved in a solution.
