A man publishes posters to persuade people to peacefully protest against the draft and not register. Court ruled that he was violating free speech, citing that speech protected in speech time differs from scrutiny in wartime.
Gitlow v NY
Court ruled that the 1st amendment does apply to states via the 14th amendment. This case deals with distribution of pamphlets advocating overthrow of government-ruled that such speech is protected by states, but was still found guilty
Tinker v Des Moines
Held that symbolic speech was protected free speech, even in a school, as long as it doesn't affect learning environment or school discipline
Buckley v Valeo
Held that individual contribution limits on political campaigns did not violate the 1st Amendment. It also ruled that placing limits on expenditures from their own resources and family resources was a violation of the 1st amendment
New York Times v Sullivan
Court held that First Amendment protects the publication of all statements, even false ones, about the conduct of federal officials (except with intentionally malice-filled statements)
New York Times v US
'Pentagon Papers case', held that Nixon could not prevent publication, since publication would not cause an immediate event that would imperil American forces
Miranda v Arizona
Court specifically addressed the necessary aspects of police warnings to suspects, including warnings of the right to remain silent and the right to have counsel present during interrogations.

Ruled that the right to an attorney is a fundamental right and essential to a fair trial
