New Economic Policy (NEP)
A policy introduced by Lenin in 1921 allowing some capitalist activity to revitalize the Soviet economy post-civil war.
Collectivization
The policy of combining small individual farms into larger mechanized farms under state control, instituted by Stalin.
Gulag
A system of labor camps in the Soviet Union where millions of political prisoners and peasants who resisted collectivization were sent.
Comintern
The Communist International, founded by Lenin in 1919 to promote worldwide communism and revolution.
Great Purge
A campaign of political repression in the Soviet Union during the 1930s aimed at eliminating dissent against Stalin's rule.
Totalitarianism
A governmental system where the state seeks to control every aspect of public and private life.
Police State
A government that maintains control through the use of police force and surveillance to suppress dissent.
Indoctrination
The process of teaching a set of beliefs or ideology in order to mold individuals' attitudes and behaviors.
Propaganda
Information, especially biased or misleading, used to promote a political cause or point of view.
Holodomor
The man-made famine in Ukraine from 1932 to 1933 orchestrated by Stalin, leading to millions of deaths.
