NYS Donate Life Registry
A registry where individuals aged 16 or older can provide legal consent for organ and tissue donation upon death.
Commercial Driver License (CDL)
Mandatory for vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) exceeding 26,000pounds (11,794kg) or those carrying hazardous materials.
Operator (Class D) license
A non-commercial license for individuals age 18 (or 17 with driver education) permitting the operation of vehicles with a GVWR of 26,000pounds or less.
Enhanced Driver License (EDL)
A dual-purpose document for U.S. citizens used for travel and border crossings to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean by land or sea.
REAL ID License
A license meeting federal requirements for domestic air travel and access to federal facilities starting May 3, 2023.
"R" Endorsement
Required for the operation of recreational or rental vehicles over 26,000pounds GVWR or 40 feet in length.
Identity Proof Point System
A system where applicants must provide documents totaling at least 6 points to verify their name for a first license application.
Written Knowledge Test Passing Score
A score of at least 14 correct answers out of 20 questions, including at least 2 out of 4 correct road sign questions.
Junior Permit Supervision
Requires the holder to be supervised by a licensed driver who is at least 21 years of age.
Certification of Supervised Driving (MV-262)
A document junior drivers must provide to prove completion of 50 hours of practice, including 15 hours after sunset.
License Suspension
The temporary removal of a driver license for a set period, usually requiring a $50 termination fee.
License Revocation
The cancellation of a driver license, requiring a re-application process and a $100 fee after the revocation period ends.
Aggravated DWI (Agg-DWI)
A violation occurring when a driver has a Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) of .18% or higher.
DWI (Driving While Intoxicated)
A violation occurring when a driver has a Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) of .08% or higher.
DWAI (Driving While Ability Impaired)
A violation involving alcohol impairment, typically evidence of a BAC of at least .05%.
Chemical Test Refusal
The refusal to take a breath, blood, or urine test, resulting in a 1-year license revocation and a $500 civil penalty.
Title
A document that proves vehicle ownership; unlike registration, there is no minimum age to hold this.
NYS Move Over Law
Requires drivers to slow down and change lanes for emergency or hazard vehicles stopped on the shoulder with lights activated.
Parking
Stopping the vehicle to load or unload merchandise or passengers.
Standing
Stopping the vehicle to load or unload passengers only, while the driver remains inside.
Stopping
The act of halting the vehicle entirely.
Leandra’s Law
A law requiring mandatory ignition interlocks for any DWI conviction and making it a Class E felony to drive drunk with a child under 16 in the car.
No Zones
The large blind spots located around tractor-trailers where the truck driver cannot see other vehicles.
MV-104 Report
A motor vehicle accident report that must be filed within 10 days if property damage exceeds $1,000 or if there is an injury or death.
