A systematic process of collecting, analyzing and interpreting data to increase our understanding of a specific phenomenon
What is research?
Kept the same, makes sure only the variable you’re studying is affecting the results
What does controlled mean in research?
Procedures are relevant, appropriate and justified
What does rigorous mean in research?
Procedures done follow a specific sequence
What does systematic mean in research?
The results must be true and can be validated
What does valid and verifiable mean in research?
Results are drawn from either evidence or observations
What does empirical mean in research?
Procedures done must be solid enough to the point where others can either question it or agree with it
What does critical mean in research?
Reality is objective, existing outside of us and we can measure it
What is positivism?
Reality is subjective, shaped by human experiences, meanings and interpretations
What is interpretivism?
A subproblem must be completely researchable
What is the first requirement of a subproblem?
Each subproblem needs to be clearly tied to the interpretation of data
What is the second requirement of a subproblem?
Subproblems must add to the totality of the problem
What is the third requirement of a subproblem?
Subproblems should be small in number
What is the fourth requirement of a subproblem?
How it connects to the field, or current issues
What does relevant mean in compelling research problems?
Whether or not it can be investigated with current methods
What does researchable mean in compelling research problems?
Whether it is clear, and well defined
What does specific mean in compelling research problems?
Will it make a big or meaningful impact
What does significant mean in compelling research problems?
Describes a situation, event, or phenomenon
What is a descriptive research problem?
Explores new areas where little is known, helps to generate ideas or hypotheses
What is an explorative research problem?
Assesses or judges the value, effectiveness, or impact of something
What is an evaluative research problem?
Forecasts future outcomes based on current data or patterns
What is a predictive research problem?
Seeks to explain the reasons behind a phenomenon
What is an explanatory research problem?
Tests cause-and-effect by manipulating variables under controlled conditions
What is an experimental research problem?
A purposeful way of acquiring data relevant to research problems and subproblems
What is research design?
Qualitative approach on perceiving what people think, feel about something
What is phenomenology?
Observing a certain group of people for a specific period of time to study their behaviors in their natural habitat
What is ethnography?
A theory is made from data rather than from a hypothesis
What is grounded theory?
Providing an in-depth understanding of a specific case (could be a program, event, individual or groups)
What is a case study?
Analyzing language, speech, communication and interactions among people
What is discourse analysis?
Explore stories and personal things to understand an experience or identity
What is narrative analysis?
What you can perceive or see
What are observations in qualitative data gathering?
Questions and personal accounts from people
What are interviews in qualitative data gathering?
A text
What are documents in qualitative data gathering?
Videography, photography or capturing sound
What are audiovisual materials in qualitative data gathering?
Describe characteristics of a population or situation
What is descriptive research design?
Testing cause and effect relationships
What is experimental research design?
Checking whether or not there is a relationship
What is correlational research design?
Explore a cause and effect but without full experimental control
What is causal-comparative / quasi-experimental research design?
