Development that meets the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs (WCED, 1987).

From Latin sustinere (to maintain, support, endure); principle that everything needed for survival depends on nature.

UN Conference on Human Environment (1972)
First discussion on environment + development.
Philippine Strategy for Sustainable Development (PSSD)
Included environmental concerns in decision-making, population planning, protected areas, pollution prevention, environmental education.
UN Conference on Environment and Development (1992)
Created strategy for stronger sustainable development.
World Summit on Sustainable Development (2002)
Focused on sustainable consumption, water, sanitation, energy.
MDGs → SDGs
MDGs (2015) replaced by SDGs. Goals include gender equality, zero hunger, climate action, peace, clean energy.

Blueprint for sustainable development in PH; covers individuals, families, communities, ecosystems.
Levels of Action for Sustainability
International (UN goals), National (Agenda 21), Community (barangay programs), Family/Individual (waste mgmt, eco-friendly lifestyle).
Why is sustainable development necessary?
Prevents destruction of nature, ensures future generations can meet needs, provides alternative to environmental crisis.
