Neo-Freudians
A group of individuals who liked what Freud theorized: Id, super-ego, the unconscious, personality being formed in early childhood, anxiety, defense, mechanisms.
How did Neo-Freudians differ from Freud?
1) Conscious mind is involved with interpreting experiences and coping with our environment
2) Did not believe sex and aggression influenced personality
Carl Jung
-Believed that Freud overemphasized sexuality
-We inherited the experiences and memories of our ancestors (impacts our lives on the unconscious level)
-Believed in opposites (archetypes; introversion v extroversion)
-Most people do not have balanced pairs, most of us have one trait that is more dominant than the other, creates personality.
Karen Horney
-Disputed existence of "penis envy" and Oedipal Complex
-Believed that differences between men and women was the result of social roles
-Believed that personality developed beyond childhood
-Believed that personality could be blocked by basic anxiety (leads to mental illness)
-10 neurotic needs to be healthy
-Deal with basic anxiety be moving toward, away, or against other people
Alfred Adler
-Developed theses compassing the effect of birth oder, lifestyle, and the inferiority complex on personality development
-Gave more credit to social groups/environment on personality than Freud
-Believed if we suffered from feelings of inferiority that we tried to compensate for our inferiority in our behaviors
