Garden Scene, Villa of Livia

  • Villa of Livia Drusilla, wife of Augustus

  • Based off her garden

  • Villa of Livia is in primaporta (First gate u go into to enter rome)

  • Second style wall painting → meant to trick your eye and be a window to the world/landscape

  • Livia wanted it frescoed → fresh plaster on the wall that is painted, done in wet climates

Augustus of Primaporta

  • Augustus: Grandson to Ceasar, ceasar was a prick who used proganda and his image to appear godly

  • Contrapposto Stance / Pose: Copied from Polykleitos's classical Greek Spear-Bearer showing a lifelike, balanced posture that projects physical perfection and civilization.

  • Adlocutio Gesture: Raising his right hand to address his troops, symbolizing military command and leadership

  • Cupid on a Dolphin: Placed at his right leg; Cupid is the son of Venus, signaling Augustus's divine lineage

  • Breastplate (Cuirass): Filled with political propaganda symbolizing peace, military victory, and cosmic/divine approval under Augustan rule

  • Idealized Face: Portrays Augustus as youthful and ageless (never aging past his twenties/thirties) regardless of his actual age, breaking from the older Roman Republican tradition of realistic portraits. GODS DONT AGE
