What is the dermis?

• the second layer of the skin

• has 2 layers

What is the Papillary layer?

• the superficial dermis layer (1/5 o thickness)

• consists of areolar connective tissue

What is Dermal Papillae?

• the upward finger like extensions of the dermis

• they fit into epidermal ridges on fingers that leave fingerprints

What are Meissner Corpuscles?

• tactile receptors, nerve endings sensitive to touch

• in papillary layer of dermis

What are Free Nerve Endings?

• associated with sensations of warmth, coolness, pain, tickling, itching

• in papillary layer of dermis

What is the Reticular Layer?

• the 2nd layer of dermis

• deeper and thicker

• made of Dense Irregular CT

What are Sudoriferous Glands?

• sweat glands, produce an secrete sweat

• in dermis

What are Sebaceous Glands?

• oil glands, secretes oil

• in dermis

Hair Follicles

• a structure in the dermis

• the body and root of the hair follicle is found in the dermis

• they receive nutrients from blood vessels and connect to oil glands

• originate from epidermis

Collagen and Elastic Fibers

• a structure in the dermis

• gives us elasticity, strength, and extensibility

• extremes stretching causes striae (stretch marks) from small tears in the dermis

What is the Hypodermis (Subcutaneous) Layer?

• layer below the dermis (not considered part of skin)

• made of Areolar and Adipose Loose CT

• stores fat, large blood vessels, and Pacinian corpuscles (sensitive to pressure)
