what is self esteem
the tendency to feel good or bad about ourselves- first becomes major issue in elementary school
What are the five areas that children draw from to create their self-esteem?
Scholastic competence (academic talents)
Behavioral conduct (obedience or being “good”)
Athletic skills (preformance at sports)
Peer likeability (popularity)
Physical appearance (looks)
How is self-esteem distorted within children who have externalizing tendencies?
these childern deny reality and blame others to preserve their unrealistically high feelings of self-worth
How is self-esteem distorted within children who have internalizing tendencies?
they take failures personsonally (ex- my teacher didnt give me a highfive today, so she hates me). They are at risk of developing learned helplessness (they give up without even trying)
How do both externalizing and internalizing tendencies face a similar danger of ensuring they will probably fail?
Externalizing people arent able to see what they need to do to help themselves succeed,
internalzing people assume they’re not competent enough and cut off the chance of success.
What is self-efficacy? How is this related to self-esteem?
Self-efficacy is related self-esteem because the more childern can prove to themselves that they can do things (expecially new or hard things), the higher their self-esteem gets.
