Bonding
The process by which atoms share or transfer electrons to form compounds.
Covalent Bonding
A type of bonding where electrons are shared between atoms.
Octet Rule
The principle that atoms tend to bond in such a way that they each have eight electrons in their valence shell.
Electronegativity Difference
The difference in ability of atoms to attract electrons; used to determine bond type.
Ionic Compound
A compound formed by the electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions.
Formula Unit
The simplest ratio of ions in an ionic compound.
Covalent Compounds
Compounds formed by covalent bonding, generally involving only non-metals.
Diatomic Elements
Elements that naturally exist as molecules composed of two atoms of the same element.
Lewis Structure
A diagram that shows the arrangement of valence electrons among atoms in a molecule.
Carbon Tetrafluoride
A covalent compound composed of one carbon atom and four fluorine atoms, represented as CF₄.
