1920s economically

after WW1, during the 1920s, American prospered economically.

  • faster production through assembly lines

  • government policy, such as less taxes, less government regulation, and less enforcement of antitrust laws

  • consumer economy, where people bought items for popularity rather then need

  • use of electricity

however, no regulation meant a greater gap between the rich and the poor

  • this is because Americans were buying due to the popularity rather than need. Products, such as home appliances, cars, were all consumer items, those that are wants and popular.

immediate cause: stock market crash. at the peak economically, a drop in stocks, caused everyone to pull out there money

during the first years of the great depression, President Hoover among others believed that it the depression would pass, leading to his ease and lack of government regulation

  • overtime, he realized he needed to do something and started enacting policies

  • however, his policies weren’t enough and it was the end of his term

farmers had a dust bowl (migrating, known as okies)

with the men out searching for jobs, women also did to survive, however recieved lower wages

African Americans, discriminated, left out of benefits from new deal, and still had low paying jobs

not much change for African Americans
