also has powers to use formal legal sanctions
police = stop , search, arrest and questions suspects
CPS = charge suspect / prosecute in court
judges / magistrates = bail accused / remand in custody ,sentence to punishment
prison service = detain prisoners for duration of sentence , punish for misbehaving
POSITIVE SANCTIONS
assist prosecution = offenders can earn lower sentence
good behaviour by prisoners - earn more privileges
COERCION
using threat or force to make someone do something
EXAMPLES: sending someone to prison for stealing
FEAR OF PUNISHMENT
involves threats force will be used if you don’t obey the law
EXAMPLE: commit offence - arrested, charged or convicted against will
