What is the function of the cemetery?
-house dead human bodies
-Provide sanitation
-community center
-facilitates grief
What is a memorial?
Physical object that is designed for the purpose of remembering. Also helps to identify an individual’s final resting place
What is a monument?
-A structure that is usually made of stone or metal that is erected to commemorate the life, deeds or career of a deceased person/people
-typically marks a section or group of graves
What is a marker?
A small headstone, usually of one piece, that is used to identify an individual grave- can be temporary or permanent.
WHat is an epitaph?
A type of incription that commemorates deeds or qualities of the deceased
What is a cenotaph?
An incription that is in memory of the dead, without a body present
What is a base? (marker component)
The flat, lower part of a monument that offers support
What is a die (tablet)(marker component)?
the main part of the monument; the upright portion above the base where the inscription is located
What is an accessory? (marker component)
Any item used to enhance the marker- typically offers another level of memorialization
What is the flush marker style?
Flush to the ground with a top even to the surrounding terrain. Can be made of granite, bronze or be in conjuction to a larger, main monument
What is a beveled marker?
A small headstone that is set above ground with a slightly slanting top
What is a slanted marker?
One that has a face with an angle greater than 45 degrees but less than 90 degrees in relationship to the terrain- may sit on a base
What is a bench marker?
A marker in the shape of a bench that offers a place to sit, rest and reflect. Usually includes an inscription and can often supplement another memorial.
What are upright monuments?
Grave markers which stand perpendicular to the surrounding terrain. They can be vertical (taller than they are wide) or horizontal (wider than they are tall)
What are specialty markers?
Markers of any unique design like crosses, statuary, hearts, animals, angels, etc. Determined by image, manufacturers ability to create an image and the cost.
What is granite?
Hard, durable igneous rock
What is bronze?
alloy of copper and tin/zinc
What is marble
type of limestone that is softer and less durable than granite
What is slate?
A metamorphic rock that is used more in areas where slate is naturally abundant
What is a mausoleum?
Building containing crupts or vaults for entombment; above ground structure for burial
What is a crypt?
chamber in a mausoleum used to contain casketed human remains
What is a columbarium?
A structure containing niches or recesses to hold cremated remains
WHat is a niche?
Recessed space used to contain inurned, cremated remains. Can be public (for thousands of remains) or private (houses 2-8 urns, family)
What indicates crypt prices?
Location (inside or outside, highest vs heart level, individual vs double crypt space)
What is a cemetery?
Area of ground set aside and dedicated for the final disposition of dead human bodies

Cemetery, or section of one, with only flush to the ground type markers

Individual grave space used for burial of an individual
What is a multiple depth grave?
one that accomodates 2+ burials
What is a lawn crypt?
A grave space where 2 or more poeople may be buried in grave liners that are stacked one on top of the other
