General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS)
explains how your body reacts to stress in three steps:
3 Stages of General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS)
Alarm Stage
Resistance Stage
Exhaustion Stage
Alarm Stage
Your body gets a shock from the stress. It quickly reacts: your heart beats faster, you feel alert or anxious.
Resistance Stage
Your body tries to deal with the stress. You may feel okay, but your body is still working hard inside. This stage can last a while if the stress continues.
Exhaustion Stage
After too much stress for too long, your body gets tired and worn out. You may get sick, feel very tired, or feel like you can't cope anymore.
Cognitive reappraisal
A way of changing how you think about a situation so it doesn’t feel as stressful or upsetting.
