First Aid
Emergency care provided to an injured or ill person before professional medical help arrives.
Standard of Care
The level of care that one is expected to provide in a first aid situation, reflecting the skills and knowledge of someone with training.
Good Samaritan Laws
Laws that provide legal protection to individuals who offer assistance to those who are injured or in danger.
PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)
Equipment worn to minimize exposure to hazards that cause serious workplace injuries and illnesses.
Consent
Permission from a person to administer first aid, which must be obtained before providing care.
Survey the Scene
The initial assessment of the surrounding environment to identify potential hazards before providing first aid.
EMS
Emergency Medical Services, the healthcare service that provides emergency medical care.
SAMPLE
Mnemonic used to remember the questions to ask when assessing a patient: Symptoms, Allergies, Medications, Past medical history, Last food or drink, Events leading up to the incident.
DOTS
A mnemonic for assessing problems during a physical exam: Deformity, Open wounds, Tenderness, Swelling.
Recovery Position
A side-lying position used to maintain an open airway in an unresponsive but breathing individual.
Negligence
Failure to provide the standard of care which results in intentional or unintentional harm to another individual.
Emergency
A serious, unexpected, and often dangerous situation requiring immediate action.
Bystanders
Individuals who are present at the scene of an emergency and may assist or observe.
Universal Precautions
A set of guidelines designed to prevent the transmission of bloodborne pathogens; includes using PPE.
Assessment
The process of determining the nature and extent of a person's injury or illness.
Abandonment
The premature cessation of care once it has been initiated, without ensuring that another qualified person takes over.
Crisis
A time of intense difficulty, trouble, or danger that requires immediate assistance.
Life-Threatening Condition
A medical situation that poses immediate risk to a person's life.
Victim’s Demeanor
The behavior or attitude of a person in distress, which can provide clues about their condition.
Legal Duty to Act
A legal obligation to provide assistance in certain situations.
Transport
The act of moving an injured person to a medical facility or emergency assistance.
