Diaspora
Dispersion of a population away from its homeland; examples include the Jewish Diaspora and Vietnamese Diaspora.
Zionism
A movement (1918–1945) among Jews to return to Jerusalem (called Zion) and establish an independent homeland in Palestine; aims include preserving culture and language and believing the land is God-given.
Jewish Immigration to Palestine (1918–1945)
Period when Jews sought to return to Palestine, including appeals to Britain; 1929 riots marked violence; after World War II, survivors sought to move to Palestine.
1929 Riots
Violent clashes between Jews and Arabs in Palestine, resulting in deaths and increased tensions.
United Nations
International organization founded after World War II to promote peace and self-determination; originally about 50 members, now 193; Palestine seeks membership; first major issue addressed was the land dispute and partition.
Partition
UN plan to divide Palestine into separate Arab and Jewish states; Jerusalem seen as disputed or belonging to no one according to the notes.

Establishment of the modern state of Israel in 1948 following the end of the British Mandate and the 1948 Arab–Israeli War; later associated with occupied territories in the region.
Munich Olympics (1972)
Terrorist attack during the 1972 Olympics in Munich, carried out by a Palestinian group against Israeli athletes.
West Bank
Territory west of the Jordan River captured by Israel in 1967; hosts Israeli settlements and Palestinian communities; considered an Occupied Territory by many.
Gaza Strip
Palestinian territory along the Mediterranean; captured by Israel in 1967 and subject to blockade and conflict; commonly described as an Occupied Territory.
Israeli Settlements
Jewish communities established in the West Bank and East Jerusalem; viewed by many as illegal under international law and controversial.
Land for Peace
Policy idea that peace can be achieved in exchange for territorial concessions, recognition, or security arrangements.
Jerusalem
Holy city for Jews, Christians, and Muslims; its status is contested in the conflict and central to competing claims.
Temple Mount / Al-Aqsa
Sacred Jerusalem site important to Muslims; linked to beliefs about Prophet Muhammad’s ascent to heaven; a focal point in religious claims over the city.
Palestinians
Arab population in the region seeking self-determination and a homeland; longstanding ties to the land and tensions with Jewish immigration and Israeli governance.
