Hydrogen bonds
Intermolecular forces that occur when a strong partial positive charge (δ+) on a hydrogen atom (H) interacts with a lone electron pair of nitrogen (N), oxygen (O), or fluorine (F).
Prerequisites for hydrogen bonds
The presence of non-bonding electron pairs and bonds such as H−N, H−O, or H−F within the molecule.
Relative strength of attraction
Hydrogen bonds are characterized as the strongest type of intermolecular attraction force.
Examples of hydrogen bonding substances
Ammonia (NH3) and water (H2O).
Influence on boiling point
Hydrogen bonds cause the boiling point to be at its highest compared to substances with similar molar mass.
Solubility characteristics
Hydrogen bonds facilitate very good solubility in water and other polar solvents (LM).
Surface tension
A property of water caused by the influence of hydrogen bonds.
