Organic chemistry
A branch of chemistry that studies carbon containing substances.
Saturated compound
A compound with molecules in which all carbon–carbon bonds are single bonds.
Unsaturated compound
A compound with molecules in which one or more carbon–carbon bonds are not single bonds.
Functional group
An atom or group of atoms that determine the chemical properties of a homologous series.
Homologous series
A family of similar compounds with similar chemical properties due to the presence of the same functional group.
Empirical formula
The simplest integer ratio of the atoms present in a compound.
Molecular formula
A representation that shows the number of each type of element in a molecule.
Structural formula
A representation that shows the structure of the molecule and how the atoms are connected together.
Structural isomers
Compounds with the same molecular formula but different structural formulas.
