Exponential Notation
A concise method to represent repeated multiplication of the same factor.
Base
The number used as a repeated factor in exponential notation.
Exponent
Indicates the number of times the base is used as a factor.
Zero Exponent
Any number raised to the power of 0 equals 1, except 0 itself.
Exponent of 1
Any number raised to the power of 1 is the number itself.
Negative Exponents
Indicates division or reciprocal.
Expanded form
The expression of a number as repeated multiplication of its base.
Example of 42 in exponential notation
4² is read as '4 to the second power' or '4 squared'.
Example of 54 in exponential notation
5⁴ means 5 x 5 x 5 x 5.
Value of 9²
The value of 9² is 81, calculated as 9 x 9.
Value of 4⁵
The value of 4⁵ is 1024, calculated as 4 x 4 x 4 x 4 x 4.
