Thermochemistry
the scientific study of heat that is released or absorbed during chemical changes
Energy
the ability to do work. Matter can contain two types of energy; kinetic energy and potential energy.
Potential Energy (PE)
is stored energy that has the potential to do work, but is not current doing work. Most of the energy in the world is stored as potential energy.
Kinetic Energy (KE)
or the energy of motion, is based on the movement of an object, or of a substance. Once an object begins moving its potential energy is converted into Kinetic energy.
Law of Conservation of Energy
“Energy can neither be created nor destroyed, but instead is transferred between a system and its surroundings.”
-Energy can transform from one form to another
-Energy cannot be lost. Ever.
Chemical Energy
is a form of potential energy, as it is the energy stored in the bonds between the atoms of molecules. Chemical energy is the potential energy a molecule holds that could be released through a chemical reaction.
Thermal energy
is a form of kinetic energy. Thermal energy is the energy of heat present. Heat is the transfer of energy between substances, therefore thermal energy is in a constant motion and can move between substances which makes it a form of kinetic energy.
Joules
(J) is the unit used to measure heat (thermal energy)
