Mood Disorders
Group of disorders characterized by a significant disturbance in a person's predominant mood
Depressive & Bipolar
2 Main Categories of Mood Disorders
Depressive Disorders
Mood disorders characterized by the presence of sadness, emptiness, or irritability, often accompanied by a loss of interest or pleasure in activities 2.
Bipolar Related Disorders
Mood disorders characterized by significant shifts in mood, energy, activity levels, concentration, and the ability to carry out day-to-day tasks
Psychotic Features
Specifier of mood disorders that include psychotic symptoms (hallucinations and delusions). They can be mood-congruent or mood-incongruent
Mood-congruent
Psychotic features directly related to the depression
Mood-incongruent
Psychotic features that does not seem consistent with the depressed mood
Anxious Distress (mild to severe)
Specifier of mood disorders that include the presence and severity of accompanying anxiety which can make suicidal thoughts and completed suicide more likely
Mixed Features
Specifier of mood disorders in which a person has at least 3 symptoms of MANIA
Melancholic Features Specifier
Specifier of mood disorders that applies only if the full criteria for a major depressive episode (MDE) have been met.
It includes some of the more severe somatic (physical) symptoms: early-morning awakenings, weight loss, loss of libido, & excessive guilt
Catatonic Features
Specifier of mood disorders that is a group of neuropsychiatric symptoms primarily involving profound disturbances in movement, responsiveness, and communication.
They an be applied in an MDE, personality disorder, or manic episode
Catalepsy
Specifier of mood disorders that is a catatonic feature that involves the absence of movement (stuporous state) in which muscles are waxy and semirigid
Atypical Features
Specifier of mood disorders that apply to both depressive episodes, whether in the context of PDD or not. Features include oversleeping and overeating = gaining weight, can't react with interest or pleasure to some things
Peripartum Onset
Specifier of mood disorders that applies to both MDE and Manic Episode. Higher incidence of depression is found postpartum
Baby Blues
Normal responses to the stresses of childbirth, and disappear quickly 8
Seasonal Pattern
Temporal specifier of mood disorders that applies to recurrent MDD; begins in the late fall and ends with the beginning of spring
Must have occurred for at least 2 years with no evidence of nonseasonal MDE
