Evolution
The accumulation of genetic changes within populations over time.
Population
Group of individuals of one species that live in the same geographic area at the same time
Species
Group of organisms, with similar genetic information, structure, function, and behavior, that are capable of interbreeding with one another
Microevolution
Minor evolutionary changes of populations usually viewed over a few generations.
Macroevolution
Major evolutionary events, such as formation of different species from common ancestors, usually viewed over a long period.
Natural Selection
Darwin’s scientific explanation of evolution where better adapted organisms are more likely to survive and become the parents of the next generation.
Homology
Similarity in structure due to common ancestry.
Vestigial Structures
Anatomical feature or behavior that no longer seems to have a purpose in the current form of an organism.
Radioactive isotopes (radioisotopes)
Present in a rock provide a means to accurately measure its age and Emit invisible radiations
Fossil
Remains or traces typically left in sedimentary rock by previously existing organisms
Biogeography
Geographic distribution of species
Comparative Anatomy
Comparison of body structures in different species
Comparative Embryology
Comparing early stages of development in different animal species
