X-axis
The axis representing the independent variable.
Y-axis
The axis representing the dependent variable.
Independent variable
The variable that is changed or manipulated in an experiment.
Dependent variable
The variable that is measured in an experiment.
Positive relationship
A graph pattern where as X increases, Y increases.
Negative relationship
A graph pattern where as X increases, Y decreases.
No relationship
A condition on a graph with no clear pattern.
Cohesion
Water molecules attracting water molecules (water→water).
Adhesion
Water molecules attracting other things (water→other things).
High specific heat
The property of water that resists temperature changes.
Ice flotation
Ice floats because it is less dense than liquid water.
Hydrocarbon
An organic molecule containing C+H only.
Macromolecule
A large biological molecule.
Functional group
A group of atoms that gives molecules specific properties.
Hydroxyl
A functional group represented as OH.
Carbonyl
A functional group represented as C=O.
Carboxyl
A functional group represented as COOH.
Amino
A functional group represented as NH2.
monomer
A simple molecule that can join together with other similar molecules to form a polymer.
polymer
a large molecule made of many smaller, repeating chemical units called monomers linked together in long chains
