Hypha
The basic microscopic structural unit of molds.
Mycelium
The macroscopic indication of molds, formed by a combination of hyphae.
Hyphal tip elongation
The process where cells are created and hyphae increase in length due to apical growth with mitotic division.
Septa
Cross-walls that divide hyphae into individual cells.
Conidia
Microscopic spores used mainly for reproduction and identification, usually resulting from asexual mitosis.
Epidermophyton floccosum
A fungal species that can produce club shaped macroconidia.
Rapid Growers
Fungi that show growth within the 1st week of incubation, often belonging to the saprophytic group.
Mycosel agar
A culture medium containing inhibitors such as antibiotics and antifungal agents to ensure isolation of organisms.
Phenol
A component of the Lactophenol Cotton Blue (LPCB) mount used to kill any live microorganisms.
Lactic Acid
A component of the LPCB mount used to preserve fungal structures.
Cotton Blue
A component of the LPCB mount used to stain the chitin present in the fungal cell wall.
Potassium Hydroxide (KOH)
A substance used in Direct Microscopic Examination (DME) to dissolve proteinaceous substances other than keratin, skin debris, or tissue fragments.
Tease mount technique
A microscopic method that involves teasing colonies; it is widely used but can destroy hyphal elements and morphology.
Scotch tape method
A method where superficial structures stick to tape; a disadvantage is that cellulose on the tape can be mistaken for hyphal elements.
Riddell Culture Method (Microculture method)
The most effective method for collecting rhizoids and intact colonies; it ensures morphology is more intact than other techniques.

Hyaline (moniliaceous) hyphae
Nonpigmented or lightly pigmented hyphae that uptake LPCT and appear blue.
Phaeoid (dematiaceous) hyphae
Hyphae that are darkly pigmented (pale to dark brown or black) due to the presence of melanin in the cell wall.
Aseptate hyphae (coenocytic hyphae)
A multinucleate structure without division or cross walls, such as those found in Zygomycetes.
Spiral Hypha
Tightly coiled hyphae seen in certain pathogenic fungi, especially Trichophytonmentagrophytes.
Pectinate Hypha
A hypha with a 'broken comb' appearance, commonly found in Microsporumaudouinii.
Favic Chandelier Hypha
Curved, freely branching antler-like hyphae characteristic of Trichophytonschoenleinii.
Rhizoids
Rootlike structures that might be seen in some of the Zygomycetes.
Conidiogenesis
The specific mode of conidium formation.
Sympodial arrangement
A conidial arrangement following a zigzag pattern (rakis formation) where the last produced conidium is smaller (retrogressive development).
Catenulate
An arrangement of conidia in chains.
Acropetal maturation
Progression of maturation in catenulate conidia from the base to the apex (upward direction).
Basipetal maturation
Maturation where young cells are found at the base of the structure.
Thallic conidiogenesis
Conidial development where there is no enlargement; instead, a pre-existing segment of fungal hyphae is converted into conidia.
Blastic conidiogenesis
Conidial development starting with an initial enlargement of the conidium before it is delimited by septum formation.
Phialides
Vaselike conidiogenous cells that produce conidia in basipetal succession without increasing in length.
Annellides
Conidiogenous cells that produce conidia in a series of short percurrent proliferations (annellations), where the tip increases in length and becomes narrower.
Biseriate conidial head
A morphology in Aspergillus where there are two rows (metulla and phialides) before the conidia.
Arthroconidia (Arthrospores)
Thallic conidia formed by the fragmentation of hyphae or lysis of a disjunctor cell; may be square, rectangular, or barrel-shaped.
Blastoconidia (Blastospores)
Asexual conidia produced by a budding process where daughter cells are pinched off from the mother cell; commonly found in yeast like Candida.
Chlamydoconidia (Chlamydospores)
Thick-walled, large, resistant thallic conidia that function as organs of perennation rather than dissemination.
Sporangiospores
Spores produced by the Zygomycetes group in a large saclike structure called a sporangium.
