Measure of Central Tendency
A numerical index that summarizes and describes a data set by identifying the most typical value.
Mean
The arithmetic average of all values in a data set.
Median
The middle value in a data set when the data is ordered from lowest to highest.
Mode
The value that occurs most frequently in a data set.
Outlier
An unusually high or low value in a data set that can impact the mean.
Bimodal Distribution
A distribution that has two values occurring with the same highest frequency.
Multimodal Distribution
A distribution that has more than two values occurring with the same highest frequency.
Descriptive Statistics
Statistical methods that summarize and describe characteristics of a data set.
Interval Level of Measurement
A level of measurement where numbers are meaningful and represent equal intervals but do not have a true zero.
Ratio Level of Measurement
A level of measurement where numbers are meaningful, represent equal intervals, and have a true zero.
Ordinal Data
Categorical data that can be ordered but where the intervals between values are not necessarily consistent.
Nominal Data
Categorical data that cannot be ordered or ranked.
