Cation
A positively charged ion formed by metals on the left side of the periodic table.
Anion
A negatively charged ion formed by nonmetals on the right side of the periodic table.
Transition Metal Naming Standard
Charges of d-block transition metals are written in Roman numerals using Stock names (e.g., iron(II) for Fe2+).
Ammonium
A polyatomic cation with formula NH4+ and charge +1.
Hydronium
A polyatomic cation with formula H3O+ and charge +1.
Mercury(I)
A polyatomic cation with formula Hg22+, having a charge of +1 per Hg (+2 total charge).
Hydroxide
An anion with formula OH− and charge −1.
Cyanide
An anion with formula CN− and charge −1.
Acetate
An anion with formula C2H3O2− or CH3COO− and charge −1.
Nitrite
