Matter
Anything occupying space and having mass.
Solid
A phase of matter with definite shape and definite volume.
Liquid
A phase of matter with definite volume but no definite shape.
Gas
A phase of matter with no definite shape and no definite volume.
Phase
A distinct form of matter (solid, liquid, or gas) with characteristic properties.
Homogeneous mixture
A mixture with a uniform composition throughout; components are not visually distinguishable.
Heterogeneous mixture
A mixture with non-uniform composition; components are visually distinguishable.
Mixture
A combination of two or more substances not bonded chemically; can be separated by physical means.
Atom
The smallest unit of an element; cannot be split via chemical means.
Molecule
Two or more atoms bonded together; can be the same or different elements.
Element
A pure substance that cannot be decomposed into simpler substances by chemical means; composed of one kind of atom.
Compound
A substance formed when two or more elements are chemically bonded; can be broken down into its elements by chemical reactions.
Ethanol
CH3CH2OH; a common organic solvent and compound.
Mass
A measure of the amount of matter in an object; mass remains constant during a chemical change.
Weight
A measure of gravitational force on a mass; depends on location (Earth vs Moon).
Law of Conservation of Mass
Mass is conserved in chemical reactions; matter is not created or destroyed.
Conservation of Matter
The total amount of matter in a closed system remains the same.
