Sunni
The majority of the Muslims are Sunni, approximately 85% of them.
Shia (Shi’ite)
The less populated group of Muslims who believed Ali should’ve been the first caliph.
Caliph
A political and religious leader chosen by the Islamic community to be Muhammad’s successor

The most basic acts of worship for Muslims: declaration of faith, prayer, charity, fasting, and making a pilgrimage to their holy city, Mecca.

An Arabic word for “God”
Caliphate
A political and religious state made up of the Islamic community.
Bedouin
An Arabic word for “desert dweller” and a nomadic tribe that raises animals such as cattle, camel, sheep, and goats. They wear long and loose clothing to help protect against sandstorms, the heat, and bugs.
Nomadic
No permanent home, moving from place to place

The religious center of Islam and the birthplace of Muhammad
