Inflammation
A biological response to harmful stimuli, aimed at limiting damage and initiating healing.
Acute Inflammation
A rapid inflammatory response that is self-limiting, lasting from hours to days.
Chronic Inflammation
A prolonged inflammatory response that often inhibits healing and causes cellular damage.
Cardinal Signs of Inflammation
The classic signs of inflammation: pain, warmth, swelling, redness, and loss of function.
Exudative Fluids
Fluids that seep out of blood vessels due to inflammation, classified as serous, sanguineous, serosanguineous, or purulent.
Primary Intention
Wound healing where edges are clean and easily brought together, resulting in minimal scarring.
Secondary Intention
Wound healing involving extensive tissue loss and scarring, where regeneration of cells is not possible.
Tertiary Intention
Wound healing that requires delayed closure due to infection and missing deep tissue, often accompanied by significant scarring.
Factors in Wound Healing
Key aspects influencing healing including nutrition, oxygenation, circulation, immune strength, contamination, mechanical factors, and age.
Dysfunctional Wound Healing
Complications that may arise during any phase of healing, including ischemia, excessive bleeding, and infection.
Keloid
A complication characterized by hyperplasia of scar tissue.
Dehiscence
The opening of a wound’s suture line.
Evisceration
The extrusion of tissue and organs from an opened wound.
Fistula
An abnormal connection between two epithelium-lined organs or vessels.
