Independent Clause
A complete sentence that contains a subject and a verb, and expresses a complete thought.
Dependent Clause
A clause containing a subject and a verb that does not express a complete thought and cannot stand alone.
Simple Sentence
A sentence that contains one independent clause.
Compound Sentence
A sentence consisting of 2 or more independent clauses joined either with a comma and coordinating conjunction, or with a semicolon.
Comma Splice
The error of using only a comma to join two independent clauses.
Complex sentence
A sentence that consists of one independent clause and at least one dependent clause.
Compound-complex sentence
A sentence structure that contains at least two independent clauses and at least one dependent clause.
