Isotope
An atom of the same element that has a different number of neutrons, resulting in a different mass (e.g., carbon-12 and carbon-13).
Carbon-12
An isotope of carbon with mass number 12 (6 protons, 6 neutrons).
Carbon-13
An isotope of carbon with mass number 13 (6 protons, 7 neutrons).
Atomic weight
The weighted average mass of an element's isotopes, calculated from each isotope's mass and its natural abundance.
Isotopic abundance
The percentage of a particular isotope found in a natural sample.
One mole
The amount of substance containing Avogadro's number of entities (6.022 × 10^23).
Molar mass
The mass of one mole of a substance; numerically equal to the element's atomic weight.
Weighted average calculation
Process of summing (isotope mass × abundance) for all isotopes to obtain atomic weight.
Product table (isotope masses)
A reference table listing isotopic masses (and abundances) used to compute atomic weights.
