Main functions of skeletal system
Structural support, protection, growth center for cells, reservoir of minerals, movement
Structural support
supports soft tissue including muscles and internal organs
Protection
Protective cage for delicate body parts
Growth centre for cells
Produces red blood cells + platelets
Reservoir of minerals
reservoir the body can call upon to regulate calcium and phosphorus in the body
Movement
Tendons attach muscle to bones, bones contract and move bones for movement
Long bone
Found in arms and legs (femur)
Short bones
most common in wrists (carpal bone + ankles)
Flat bone
Flat + thin (roof of skull)
Irregular bone
odd looking bone (sphenoid + vertebrae)
Sesamoid bone
Unusual, small, flat bones wrapped within tendons moving over bony surface (patella)
Axial skeleton
Includes vertebral column, skull, and rib cage (80 bones)
Appendicular skeleton
Includes movable limbs (126 bones)
landmark
Ridge, bump, groove, depression, or prominence on surface of body
landmark function
guide to location of other body structures
Cartilage
At both ends of bone, allow smooth movement within joints
Periosteum
Covers entire length of bone
Medullary cavity
Filled with red + yellow bone marrow, where wbc forms
Epiphysis
Portion of bone at either end made of compact bone, covered in articular cartilage
Epiphyseal plate
responsible for growth of long bones
Compact bone
80% of body
Calcellous bone
20% of body
