What is the difference between phonemic and phonetic transcription?

  • Phonetic transcription shows how sounds are actually said, including small details like accents or how your mouth moves.

  • Phonemic transcription shows only the sounds that matter for meaning in a language, ignoring little details.

  • Phonetic = exact pronunciation

  • Phonemic = important sounds for meaning
