Matter
Anything that has mass and takes up space.
Pure Substances
Substances that contain only one type of matter.
Elements
Pure substances made of only one type of atom; cannot be broken down into simpler substances under normal lab conditions.
Compounds
Substances made of atoms of two or more elements that are chemically combined.
Mixture
A combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined.
Homogeneous Mixture
A mixture in which the composition is uniform throughout.
Heterogeneous Mixture
A mixture in which the composition is not uniform throughout.
Chemical Symbol
A one or two-letter representation of an element, such as H for Hydrogen or Na for Sodium.
Examples of Elements
Oxygen (O), Nitrogen (N), and Mercury (Hg).
Examples of Compounds
Water (H2O), Sodium Chloride (NaCl), and Carbon Dioxide (CO2).
