Model of Primary Endosymbiosis
A process where a free-living prokaryotic cell is engulfed by a larger cell; supported by the fact that the resulting organelle has a double membrane.
Golgi Apparatus
The organelle that acts as the site of modification and packaging of proteins and lipids prior to export from the cell.
Mitochondrion
The organelle that is a major producer of ATP and is found in both heterotrophs and autotrophs.
Eukaryotic Compartmentalization
An evolutionary advantage in eukaryotic organisms where organelles compartmentalize cellular processes, thereby increasing the efficiency of those processes.
Advantage of Internal Membranes
Internal membranes isolate specific reactions and contribute to cell function by providing a favorable local environment for metabolic reactions, increasing metabolic efficiency.
