what happens in the islets of Langerhans

B cells stop releasing insulin, this means that liver and muscle cells take up less glucose, A cells in the islets of langerhans respond, glucagon is released

2
New cards

what happens with the glucagon released

glucagon circulates into the blood stream, only binding to glucagon receptors on liver cells and fat (adipose) tissue, when glucagon binds with the receptor on the liver cells, the g protein attatched to the receptor inside cell breaks off to attatch to adenylyl cyclase to increase the concentration of cAMP (by breaking down ATP)

3
New cards

what is the enzyme cascade that is present within this period

the increased concentration of cAMP, causes protein kinase enzyme to activate, which activates phosphorylase kinase enzyme, which activates glycogen phosphorolyase enzyme, which turns glycogen to glucose through glycogenolysis
