ADA purpose
1. Provide clear and comprehensive national mandate for the elimination of discrimination against individuals with disabilities
2. Allow individuals with disabilities to gain employment, enjoy commercial, cultural, and recreational benefits that society has to offer
ADA background
1. Passed July 26, 1990
2. Government agencies responsible: Equal employment opportunity commission (EEOC) and dept. of justice
General considerations
1. Requirements must take into account variety of people with disabilities
2. Pertain to the needs of many, guidelines written for the greatest need
Disability definition
Person who has physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities, a person who has a history or record of such an impairment, or a person who is perceived by others as having such impairment
Title I
1. Employment
2. Requires employers with 15 or more employees to provide qualified individuals with disabilities an equal opportunity to benefit from the full range of employment-related opportunities available to others
Employment
1. Prohibits discrimination in recruitment, hiring, promotions, training, pay, social activities, and other privileges of employment

Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
1. Nations special education law

3. Provides educational opportunities for approximately 6 million students varying degrees of disability who participate in special education
4. States must provide free appropriate public education in the least restrictive environment
Individualized Education Program (IEP)
1. Must be completed for every child with special needs
2. Document developed by parent, teachers, and related services personnel
3. Goals for how the child will receive a free public education in the least restrictive environment
