Metabolism
All chemical reactions that occur in cells to build body tissue and utilize energy. All of them occur in the mitochondria.
Photosynthesis
Processes of turning sunlight energy into sugars in plant cells, found in chloroplasts. Makes sugars from CO2 and H2O in plant cells-C,H,O.
Monomer
Small molecules that are the building blocks of larger structures, providing structure in all cells.
Polymer
Large molecules composed of monomers, used for structure and can be synthetic.
Light Dependent Reaction
The first stage of photosynthesis that splits water (H2O) to make oxygen (O2), occurs in chloroplasts.
Light Independent Reactions
The second stage of photosynthesis that makes sugars using carbon dioxide and water, also known as the Calvin Cycle. uses enzymes
Enzyme
Molecules that speed up chemical reactions, made of proteins, and found in all types of cells.
ATP
Adenosine triphosphate, a charged energy molecule found in mitochondria, acts like a rechargeable battery.
ADP
Adenosine diphosphate, the empty phase of a rechargeable battery, used in energy transfer. 1 Adenosine 2 Phosphates in all cells in mitochondria
Anaerobic
Processes that occur in the absence of oxygen, often associated with anabolism =building of complex molecules.
