Molecular Compouds
Compounds formed when two or more nonmetal atoms share electrons through covalent bonds, resulting in the formation of molecules.
Ionic
compounds formed from the electrostatic attraction between cations and anions.
Ion
A charged particle that results from the loss or gain of one or more electrons by an atom or molecule.
Formula Unit
the simplest form of an ionic compound. Must contian a metal and a nonmetal or a metal and a polyatomic ion.
Polyatomic Ion
a charged entity made up of two or more atoms covalently bonded together, which carries a net charge.
Molecule
A group of two or more atoms chemically bonded together, representing the smallest fundamental unit of a chemical compound.
Empirical Formula
gives the relative number of atoms of each element in a compound
Molecular Formula
gives the actual number of atimes of each element in a molecule of the compund
Structural Formula
Uses lines to represent the chemical bonds and shows how the atoms in the molecules are connected to each other
