What are the regions of the spine?
7 Cervical vertebrae
12 Thoracic vertebrae
5 Lumbar vertebrae
What are the joints of the vertebral column
Atlanto-occipital joint = between atlas and occipital bone of skull
Atlanto-axial joint = between atlas and axis
Intervertebral joint = fibrocartilage pads
Lumbosacral joint = cartilaginous joint connecting L5 to sacrum
Facet joint = where ribs join vertebrae
What is the function of the vertebral body?
Withstand pressure and body weight
What is the function of the foramen of the vertebrae?
Where the spinal cord travels down and protects it
What is the function of the spinous and transverse process?
Areas for attachment of muscles
What is the function of the intervertebral foramens?
Pathway for spinal cords to exit
What is the function of intervertebral discs?
Fibrocartilage discs which provide shock absorption and flexibility
What is the ideal posture?
Ear, shoulders, hips, knees and ankle all in line
What is kyphosis?
A hyperextended cervical region due to a flexed thoracic region
What is lordosis?
Hyperextended lumbar region and anterior tilt of pelvis
What is scoliosis?
S shaped curve in spine, caused by uneven shoulder levels which can accomodate for uneven pelvis
