National Artist

Gawad Pambansang Alagad ng Sining

The Filipino name for the Order of National Artist Award, which is the highest national recognition given to Filipino individuals for their artistic achievements.

The law that established the Order of the National Artist Award on April 27, 1972.

Fernando Amorsolo

The first Filipino National Artist (1972) known for romantic paintings of bucolic landscapes and idealized portraits of well-known individuals during the Commonwealth Period and the Second World War.

Guillermo Tolentino

A pioneer of academic tradition in sculpture and the artist responsible for the 'Oblation' statue at the University of the Philippines.

Oblation
