Solute
The substance dissolved in a solvent; present in smaller amount in a solution.
Solvent
The substance in which the solute is dissolved; present in greater amount in a solution.
Solution
A homogeneous mixture formed when a solute is dissolved in a solvent.
Dissolve
The process by which a solute becomes incorporated into a solvent to form a solution.
Solubility
The maximum amount of solute that can dissolve in a given amount of solvent at a specific temperature.
Filtration
A separation method that uses a filter to separate a solid from a liquid based on particle size.
Filtrate
The liquid that passes through the filter during filtration.
Filter Paper
Porous paper used in filtration to separate solids from liquids.
Uniform (Homogeneous) Mixture
A mixture that looks the same throughout; has one phase and indistinguishable components.
Non-uniform (Heterogeneous) Mixture
A mixture with visibly different parts or phases; more than one phase present.
Phase
A distinct region of a system with uniform properties; a mixture can have one or more phases.
Path of Light
Whether light can be seen traveling through a substance; indicates transparency or opacity.
Katsa (Cheesecloth)
A porous fabric used as an improvised filter material in filtration setups.
Filtration Setup
The arrangement (funnel, filter material, and container) used to separate solids from liquids by filtration.
